Where’s My Rattail? How to Keep Scalp & Hair Moisturized Under Weaves
You would think with it being March that the weather would have warmed up by now, right? In most areas of the U.S. the cold weather just can’t get enough of us. As a result of all this cool air, our hair is suffering in silence, especially if you are wearing a weave. I get it ladies. With it being so cold outside nobody has time to be combing their hair in the mornings, so a wig or protective style is most definitely the move. As much as we encourage protective styling, you want to be sure that you’re taking special care f your tresses underneath you weave so you won’t jeopardize any hard work you’ve put into making you r hair healthier. Getting under that weave can be tricky, so read below to get our top tips ways to keep scalp moisturized under hair weaves.
Tip #1: Thoroughly rinse your conditioner and shampoo with cold water.
Contrary to what you may have heard, it takes a good deal of effort to get your shampoo and conditioner out of your hair when you have a weave. Whether you have a sew-in or braids, using something that needs to be rinsed off has the potential to cause unwanted build up. Product build-up is a common reason for an itchy scalp, so do not put regular shampoo or conditioner on your hair to keep it moisturized without taking care to completely rinse off all traces of product. A lack of rinsing can and will cause a mildew smell, and no one wants that kind of headache. Shampoo and conditioning is good, just make sure you rinse properly with cold water.
Tip #2 Leave-in Conditioner Works Wonders
Because you don't have to rinse out leave-in conditioner, it also is an excellent way to give your hair the moisture it needs without the risk of causing product build up. Simply mix 1/2 water with 1/2 Shedavi Crowned Styling Leave-In Conditioner and spritz it directly onto your scalp. If you have a sew-in weave, it may be easier to use a long nozzle container.
Tip #3: Use a lightweight oil instead.
Since we don't want to worry about build-up, then using a lightweight oil full of nutrients is your best option to moisturize hair under a weave. We recommend using the Shedavi Elixir because not only is it weightless, but it also has specific ingredients that are known for promoting thick, luscious tresses. It also come with a dropper so that it is easy to apply directly to the scalp with out having to use your hands. So even while you're giving your real hair a break from manipulation, you're able to nourish your scalp. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
Tip #4: Invest into a long nozzle container
I know what you may be thinking. What in the world is a long-nozzled container? Simply put: it's one of those bottles that has an applicator attached to it so that whatever is inside can reach the roots. You may have seen something similar in a hair dye kit.
Although typically for hair dyes, long nozzle containers are the absolute best way to apply leave-in conditioner or oils to your hair without having to touch it. Don't think that just because you don't see the oil that it's not getting in there. It's easy to overdo it and make a big mess, so don't go too crazy.
As a side note, these applicators are amazing for hot oil treatments as well; but, don't make the same mistake I did and put your applicator bottle in the microwave with the oil inside. Yes, it warped and I had to buy a new one. Instead, get a cup or bowl of hot water and place the applicator-- with your Shedavi Elixir inside-- into the water-filled container. Let it sit for 2 minutes and test a drop of oil onto your hand before applying directly to scalp.
