Melaleuca Maven: Tips for Using Tea Tree Oil on Hair

When going to the store to find the perfect oil to add to your LOC regimen, it can be pretty intimidating to pick the best choice. This person says olive oil works best while that one says you should pack on the coconut oil. While it’s true that different oils have different functions, there’s one out there that doesn’t get at much respect as it deserves: tea tree oil. I’d be surprised if you haven’t heard of it before, but do you know the reason why you should put tea tree oil in your hair? Keep reading below to get the scoop on tea tree oil for hair.

What exactly is tea tree oil for hair?

Tea tree oil, or melaleuca, is a natural oil that is derived from the leaves and stems of the melaleuca plant that is native to Australia. In it’s purest form, tea tree oil has a very distinct odor which is strong enough to be noticed when applied, but subtle enough to be combined with other ingredients to mask the smell if desired. The color of tea tree oil is a light murky brown which is probably due to the stems that get mixed in with the leaves. Historically it has been used to treat infection such as athletes foot, bronchitis, burns, and just to name a few. On top of being applied topically, aboriginals sometimes would burn the leaves as a tea and inhale the fumes for internal wellness.

What are the benefits of tea tree oil for hair?

There is no question that the biggest benefit of tea tree oil for hair is its unique antibacterial properties. If you’ve ever used peppermint oil, you know that it can cause a burning sensation on the scalp because of how strong it is. In contrast, tea tree oil is much less harsh when in contact with skin while still providing a similar potent anti-fungal effect.

So on top of soothing your scalp, tea tree oil is also an overall cleanser. Therefore, if you’re looking for something to help remove all the old product off your strands and started fresh, tea tree oil for hair could be your bestie.

Another benefit of tea tree oil is that it alleviates allergic reaction. Therefore, if you discover that your hair is not reacting properly to a certain product you've tried, you may discover that adding a few drops of tea green oil to your hair will combat the negative effects.

How do I use tea tree oil for hair properly

Anyone who suffers from dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, or even psoriasis will get the most out of using tea tree oil for hair because it helps to soothe the flair ups while also making the scalp clean and free of buildup. As a person who has seborrheic dermatitis, I can attest to the relief I get from using pure tea tree oil directly on my scalp. It provides relief quickly and it doesn’t burn in the process!

All you have to do is literally put a few drops onto your fingertips and start working it through your tresses. As a matter of fact, you can just use your Shedavi Crowned Co-Wash or Shedavi Elixir to start reaping the benefits of tea tree oil because both products are purposefully infused with it.
