Coconut Oil for Hair: Why It Works So Well

A quick guide on what it is, which type is best, why it works so well, and why you have to keep it in your beauty arsenal.

Coconut Oil for Hair

For thousands of years, coconut oil has been utilized for keeping hair healthy, shiny, and soft. Its conditioning attributes and its availability make it a popular hair essential around the world. From the remote regions of Africa to posh Manhattan salons the benefits of coconut oil for hair make it an invaluable must-have. This is because it's effective on most hair types and is safe to use, even on children. It's also sustainable so it's gentle on the planet.

Why It works So Well

The fatty acids , specifically lauric acid, in coconut oil, penetrate deep into the hair shaft. This replenishes and seals in moisture, making it ideal for those with dry or damaged hair. The moisturizing qualities replace protein loss caused by long-term chemical use like dyes and relaxers. The result? Softer, shinier, and more resilient hair. Heavier oils may not go as deep into the hair and can make the hair oily. Thinner oils may not be as effective, especially if the hair has a lot of damage. Our Hair Growth Oil includes coconut oil in its blend of penetrating oils to not only moisturize your hair but encourage healthy regrowth.

Which Coconut Oil Is Best to Use on Hair?

There are two types of coconut oil, refined and unrefined. Refined uses the dried flesh of the coconut and is processed to remove the fragrance and flavor (if used for cooking). While it is safe to use on hair, the best results come with unrefined extra virgin coconut oil. It usually comes in tubs and should be a white, soft solid. Unrefined coconut oil melts at only 78 degrees and becomes clear. It should not have any foul odors or discolorations. It lasts up to five years when properly stored so you don't have to worry about it turning rancid. Refined coconut oil on the other hand only lasts about one and a half years.

Who Can Benefit From Adding Coconut Oil to Their Haircare Routine?

Nearly everyone. For those suffering from postpartum hair loss, some forms of alopecia, or if you've experienced breakage due to chemicals, coconut oil may be able to  help with hair growth. When it's gently massaged onto the scalp, the moisturized hair follicles condition new hair and give it a strong and healthy head start. While coconut oil won't make your hair grow faster it may be able to  help prevent further damage and breakage as long as the new hair is cared for. Coconut is also very effective at preventing split ends. This makes it essential for protecting the locks you already have, especially if you're transitioning to natural.

Different Ways You Can Apply Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can be applied directly to wet, damp, or dry hair. The method and amount of coconut oil you choose to use should depend on what you're using the oil for. For instance, to use it as a quick detangler, apply a small amount to wet or damp hair and finger comb or twist. This method works well if you want to tame frizz, protect your hair from the elements, and add shine. Add a little coconut oil to your hair when putting it in a protective to ensure ultra-soft and gorgeous locks.

For a luxurious deep conditioning hair mask heat up the oil just to the melting point and apply it to the entire length of the hair from root to tip. Cover with a cap and leave on for about 30 minutes. The heat from your scalp works with the oil to aid in repairing damaged hair. Shampoo your hair as usual and enjoy the remarkable softness and shine. Unlike heavy oils, coconut oil takes very little time to be absorbed into the hair. This is because it's applied while warm. The heat opens the hair cuticle and makes it easier for the oil to penetrate.

Leave-In Conditioner

Coconut oil is an excellent leave-in conditioner. Simply apply a small amount to your hair like you would if you were detangling. Wait a few minutes then rinse, but don't wash all the oil from your hair. Leave just a little, style as usual, and your hair will absorb it throughout the day. Start with a little and increase the amount you use, making sure your hair doesn't have an oily feel to it. This method also works well in-between washes when you want to freshen up your style.

Coconut oil isn't only for good for hair. It also softens and moisturizes the skin. After applying it to your hair don't wash any excess off your hands. Simply rub onto your feet, hands, or elbows to soften rough spots and calluses.

When it comes to beauty staples, coconut oil is an affordable and highly effective essential that has a remarkably long shelf life. It's readily available almost anywhere in the world so you never have to worry about not finding it. With such a wide variety of different uses, it is a beauty essential that's sure to become your daily go-to.
